ABOUT SKA

WHO ARE WE
SKA is the SaXon Kickboxing Academy formed in Birmingham in Jan 2009 and is fronted by Tyler Shakespeare who is assisted by his father Alan. Affilaited to the WKA ( World Kickboxing Association ) it principles are simple, to teach promote and further the sport of Full Contact Kickboxing and self defence.

IT'S ALL IN THE NAME
Our gym name Saxon is taken from the early Germanic settlers that populated the Southern and Eastern terrortories of England during and after the 5th century which later formed the beginning of what is widely recognised as the English Nation as we know it today. Further to this SKA is indicative of a modern popular musical era that formed a bond between the traditionally white British youth of the 1960's and the migration to this country of West Indian economic settlers. In the 1960s, a lot of young people in Jamaica were unemployed and crime and violence increased in proportion to their frustration and despondency. Reflecting this mood, the music of the time took a harder edge. Ska became the music of the disaffected, the Rude Boys. The lyrics started to chronicle the times. Ska rapidly spread to the West Indian community in England and was quickly adopted by the early skinheads, whose dress and hairstyles were influenced by the Rude Boys. But consumately formed a multi ethincal bond that has been ever present to this day. It is this ideal of multi racalism that we promote as our standard with the two tone colours of the SKA movement forming the choice of gym attire.

WHAT DO WE DO
The term Full Contact is preceived to have many definitions, but the one we here at SKA adhere too is the definition of Sport Kickboxing, having the rules of striking kicks and punches above the waist disallowing elbow and knees. A mixture of traditional martial arts kicking techniques and modern queensbury rules boxing forms the basis of what is taught, and practiced, this system also provides an extremely effective form of self defence. Whilst competetive Full Contact Kickboxing forms the core ideal practice senario, the education of it's practitioners is paramount to our ideals, and here at SKA we firmly believe in the recognised educative structure, with it's basis being in the practice of Light Continuous Kickboxing at junior level, with a progression into Jnr Full contact onto Amatuer Full contact and finally culminating in the participation of Full Contact at Proffessional level. It is within this structure that the SKA gym supports all levels of the afore mentioned Championing Both the BLCC ( British Light Continuous Council ) and Jnr Full Contact diciplines, on to the formation of a fully supported Amatuer structure which in turn supports a better standard of proffessional circuit, which from, a better, more prosperous future for the sport can be achieved.
